this week at bentley......

We have had a fantastic time in school today (safely) breaking the rules!  There have been uniform violations, wacky hair designs, juices in water bottles, extra playtimes and much, much more, all in the spirit of fun and raising money for our school.  A big thank you to all the staff and children and to all of you for supporting this event, it raised £453.00 for the school, with Yr 1 being the most prolific rule breakers and making £81.00!

This half term has flown by very quickly and we are all definitely ready for a little break.  As we have been so busy, I have asked the children to summarise what their best learning of the term has been rather than just this week.

Year R – have been enjoying reading the story of the Owl Babies and making puppets to help them perform the story

Year 1 – really enjoyed their geography project, especially when they went on a walk to the A31 footbridge to count all the vehicles travelling underneath them

Year 2 – have absolutely loved learning about the Titanic in history.  The highlight of the topic was writing their non-fiction reports and visiting the SeaCity Museum

Year 3 – discovered a large, golden egg in the courtyard a few weeks ago and have since learned it was a dragon’s egg!  They have enjoyed reading the story, The Egg, and writing a description of the egg hatching from the dragon’s perspective

Year 4 – have been investigating electricity in science and are really looking forward to making their own torches after half term

Year 5 – have enjoyed making Egyptian masks in DT which will link with their history learning about the Ancient Egyptians

Year 6 – are still talking about their visit to the O2 to take part in Young Voices.  They enjoyed the singing and dancing but, most of all, they loved the experience!

I hope you all have a very well earned break over the half term holiday.  I look forward to seeing you back in school, refreshed and ready for the new term ahead on Monday 19th February.

Acting Head Teacher

D – I – S – C – O !

A huge thank you to everyone who helped at the infant and junior disco last week.  Everyone had a great time dancing and singing along to some catchy tunes whilst wearing lots of glow accessories!  We are already looking forward to the next one!

Attendance

This week’s whole school attendance is 96.27%.

Although the government sets a target of 95% for primary schools, our governors have set a target of 98% for our school.  This is because an attendance rate of 95% still means that your child would have had approximately ten days of absence throughout the year; this is considered to be a significant loss to learning.

The class with the best attendance this week is…Year 6!

Dodgeball at Amery Hill

Mrs Rhodes took a team of Year 3 and 4 pupils to Amery Hill School on Monday to take part in the Lower Key Stage 2 Alton Schools’ Dodgeball competition.  Mrs Rhodes was incredibly proud of all the players; they represented Bentley with resilience and enthusiasm and demonstrated skills of perseverance and team spirit.

Well done Team Bentley for finishing the competition in fourth place!

Developing Dragons at Bentley!

At Bentley our core Christian values are love, courage and community.  In every class there is a cuddly, green dragon to remind us all that we can show courage in our school work by developing it to make it even better and correcting mistakes and learning from them.  To highlight this further, the children use green pens for their developing and we now have some AMAZING and bespoke new dragon stamps too!  Our stamps were designed by the very creative Carrie (Gus's mum), and funded by our lovely and hard-working PTFA.  If your child comes home with a dragon stamp on a label or you see dragons in their book feel very proud of their hard work!

Kind regards,

Jenny Matthews

Sculpture Park Trip

Year 3 went to the Sculpture park on Monday and had a brilliant time. When we saw a sculpture we would tick it off our list.  Then we took it in turns to walk into a pitch black tunnel! We had lunch near the sculptures and near the end we liked calling the doves cool names.  It was the best trip ever!

TalkIng teens

Farnham Town Council is funding the ‘Talking Teens’ course for local families again this Spring. This can be a useful course for parents with children in Year 6 to help with the transition to secondary school and the changes that brings.

Starting: Thursday 29th February 7.00-9.00pm.  It is held in person, in central Farnham. Parents make a voluntary contribution to cover the textbook and resources if they are able. The 'Talking Teens' course covers lots of different topics, including:

  • understanding of teenage development and the influence of brain development on behaviour
  • understanding of the importance of listening, verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Promoting positive approaches to boundary setting and problem-solving

More information can be found on the flyer on the Community page
