this week at Bentley.........
As a church school we are beginning to turn our attention to the Christian festival of Easter in our RE lessons and Collective Worships. Year 5 and Year 6 have visited St Mary’s Church, Bentley to work with Rev. Matt and Gemma to learn more about Lent and Easter and to share a special Lent Lunch together. A big thank you to everyone who helped with these two events from making flapjacks, to setting up the hall, heating up soup and slicing bread, to tidying away at the end. Thank you also to members of the church community who also offered their help at these events. Year 3 and Year 4 are busy preparing their contributions to the Easter Service on the last day of term too and Year 4 have visited St Mary’s Church in Froyle today as part of their RE unit of work.
It was lovely to welcome you into school for parents’ evening on Tuesday and Thursday. We hope you enjoyed looking through your children’s work and found the meeting with your child’s teacher informative. All the staff are incredibly proud of the progress every child has made so far this year and are looking forward to more great learning to come!
Here are the children’s highlights from this week…
Year R – have loved comparing their height using scaled drawings of animals as part of their maths lessons. The animal that has surprised them the most is the Emperor Penguin, which is taller than a lot of the children!
Year 1 – had a great time at the Giant Sing in Basingstoke on Wednesday. They loved meeting Barnaby Bear and their teddies enjoyed it too!
Year 2 – have been enjoying learning about division in their maths lessons.
Year 3 – have now completed all their swimming lessons. They really enjoyed going to Alton Sports Centre each week and have become much more confident swimmers.
Year 4 – have been learning how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions using bar models to help. There have been some head scratching moments but they’re very proud they are now able to do this!
Year 5 – have been enjoying learning about the Industrial Revolution in their history lessons.
Year 6 – have been reading the book Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick and have enjoyed writing character descriptions of the villain of the story, Dooby.

Attendance
This week’s whole school attendance is 96.49%.
Although the government sets a target of 95% for primary schools, our governors have set a target of 98% for our school. This is because an attendance rate of 95% still means that your child would have had approximately ten days of absence throughout the year; this is considered to be a significant loss to learning.
The class with the best attendance this week is Year R with 100%!!!
Huge congratulations Year R. This is the first time this year a class has achieved 100%!!
Well done to Year 1 who also exceeded our 98% target this week!

Kaidy-Mai for coming first in your recent gymnastics competition! We know how much you love your gymnastics and how hard you work to develop your skills. We are all very proud of you!
The Giant Sing
Years 1 and 2 had a great time at the Giant Sing with all their teddy bears on Wednesday. We had been busy at school, rehearsing songs for a performance of Barnaby Bear’s Adventures at Sea (an interactive show organised by Hampshire Music Service). Then we joined children from another eight schools at The Anvil in Basingstoke, and had a wonderful time joining in with the singing while watching the show unfold.
It was a huge adventure for us; it was exciting to travel on a coach, to a real theatre and to see a live performance.

Teacher Led Clubs
Clubs will take place next week (18th to 22nd). This will be the last week for this term.
Club places for next term will be allocated on 28th March.
easter HOLIDAY CLUB
Kathleen Proud and Sarah Forbes will be running a holiday club on Wednesday 10th and Friday 12th April here at school. The days will run from 9am till 4pm and cost £40 per day per child, £35 per child if siblings attend.
There will be lots of activities offered, including sports, fitness, forest school and crafts.

Parking
People continue to park on the yellow zigzag lines and double yellow lines surrounding the school. Please do not park or stop your car in these areas. It is not safe for our children and families as they start and finish school, as road visibility is significantly reduced if cars are parked there. It is a road traffic offence to stop on these lines during the times posted on the yellow signs outside of school and you could be fined for doing so.

The Great Big School Clean
Next Thursday 21st March, Eco Council (Y1-Y6) will be participating in the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great Big School Clean’. KS1 will be litter picking around our school site and KS2 will head onto the rec to litter pick. If your child is in Eco Council, they will need to wear wellies for this as our school woods and the rec are very muddy at the moment. In addition, a waterproof coat would be useful just in case it rains!
If your family would like to get involved in some community litter picking, Alton Society and the Guild of Optimists is hosting its annual Alton Spring Clean this Saturday between 10am and 12pm. To attend, meet outside Alton Assembly Rooms at 10am. All equipment will be provided. Alternatively, why not sign up here for the Great British Spring Clean.
