This week at Bentley...

I hope this message finds you well! Despite the rain, we’ve had a fantastic week here at Bentley. Year 4 enjoyed an exciting apple-picking trip, returning with a bountiful harvest. I even got to sample my first bottle of the delicious apple juice—it was gone in about five minutes at the Hallett house! A big thank you to our PTFA for organizing the sales.

Some Year 6 children have written about an exciting event earlier this week:

A group of our Year 6s went to a very exciting STEM workshop at Frensham Heights School focused on Greenpower Formula 24 Racing. They discussed, debated and learnt about aerodynamics, heat dissipation, battery efficiency and gearing effects. Year 6 particularly enjoyed the practical timed activities, covering car design, wheel changes and rolling pit stops. Our pupils did Bentley proud with their table topping times and superb questions.

This week, we also held the PTFA AGM, where we celebrated their incredible achievements from last year. It was heart-warming to see how much fun was had while raising funds for our school. We’ll be sharing the slides from the presentation soon, so you can catch up on what was discussed. We’ve got an exciting calendar ahead, filled with both beloved classics and some brand-new opportunities. I’m particularly thrilled to share that we’ll be hosting an afternoon tea on October 18th, to replace the rained-out welcome BBQ. It would be wonderful to see as many families there as possible!

Additionally, Bentley Parish Council is looking for someone to join their committee as a school liaison link. If you’re interested, please reach out to the clerk at clerk@bentleyparishcouncil.gov.uk.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement, as ever, my door is always open if you wish to come and have a chat. Here’s to another great week ahead!

TASTER DAY

On Thursday 3rd October we are holding a ‘Taster Day’ to give all the children in Year R, Year 1 and Year 2 a school dinner to try. The choices will be fish fingers (red) or meat-free burger (green), with chips and vegetables of the day with chocolate sponge cake for pudding. Children will be able to choose the meal they would like during registration that morning. We would love all the infant children to participate in this special day and enjoy a delicious hot meal.

On Friday 4th October the menu choices will be roast beef (red) or vegetable wellington (green).

ECO UPDATE

On Wednesday our new Eco Council came together for the first time to attend the virtual Hampshire Climate Unity Primary Conference. There were two main workshops from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. The children especially loved learning all about elephants and how to elephant-proof a field of maize in Zambia, Africa. In addition, the children heard more about the Climate Unity Artivism project based on the stunning book ‘The Crown’ by Emily Kapff as well as joining in a lesson led by pupils from St Mary’s Bentworth using some amazing geography software called Lyfta.  Here are some of the amazing facts learnt by the children.

Did You Know?

Elephants need to eat for 20 hours a day.  (Ava -Year 4)

Humans are having the biggest impact on our planet.  (Holly – Year 5)

You can making amazing art out of rubbish. (Amelie – Year 3)

In the afternoon, the Eco Council had an extra-long meeting as well as a litter pick of the playground.  They reflected on the morning’s conference, planned an assembly for next Wednesday to share their new learning and very importantly agreed their new projects – more details next week!

NURTURING PROGRAMME

Alton Cluster Support Service are running an 8 week parenting course starting on 14th October. Children are rewarding, stimulating and fun, but looking after them can be stressful and challenging. The Nurturing Programme helps deal with those challenges so that you can have a calmer, happier life. A tried and tested programme, it helps us think about what we do, why we do it and how it makes us feel.

What is PTFA Fun Club?

Join us for this after school club (3:15-5pm) for sports, games, short films and arts and crafts.

£6 per child - includes a hot dog, crisps and a treat.

All children need to have a pre-booked ticket. We cannot accept any children into the club on the evening of the event. The ticket sales will close the day before the event. No tickets can be purchased or reserved after this - we need to know exact numbers for adult:children ratios, overall safety and for purchasing the right amount of food.

Wanted: Craft material donations for the fun club. This could be paper, pens, glue, tissue paper, paint, paint brushes/pallets, string, stamps, craft sets (eg beads) etc. Please drop to your rep, the chairs or into the office.

Also wanted: volunteers to help with fun club! Please let us know if you are able to help, or sign up on the PTFA portal when booking tickets.

Apples: Apple picking is in full flow, but we need more help! Here is a spreadsheet with the pick locations: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19-UAtCs7IikiJtq05qYH9ehcK0jgH49XqDgqeoFRqjY/edit

Can you help? Children are welcomed in most locations and it doesn’t have to be during the school day! Evenings, weekends, with extended family etc. Please let us know if you can help.

Bingo at The Anchor: 7:30 arrival for 8pm start! Join us for Bingo at The Anchor - half of the profits are going towards the PTFA (the other half is one of the prizes!)
